What to do, where to stay, and how to give back
in KENYA
Where we went:
KENYA, AFRICA Virgin Bush Safaris Ltd. Directors (and New York City natives) Lisa Rolls and Cindi Crain have been planning exotic excursions for the adventurous for the past five years. They were gracious enough to introduce us to the gorgeous Shompole luxury lodge in Southern Kenya, the location for our breath-taking “Out of Africa” fashion feature.
What to do:
SAFARI Virgin Bush Safaris organizes outings all over East Africa, from forest treks with chimpanzees to remote tribal expeditions via camel and wildlife viewings by truck, boat, or foot.
Where we stayed:
SHOMPOLE Shompole (pronounced “shom-po-lay”) gives back to the community literally. The six-room, two-suite luxury lodging center, which hosts about 2250 guests per year, is situated on indigenous Maasai tribal land. Consequently, the lodge is based on a partnership with the tribe, which owns 30 percent of the property (it gets a share of the dividends as well as preferential employment at the hotel).
